Schweinsteiger suffered a knee ligament injury away on international duty with Germany in March and the initial prognosis was bleak given the severity of the injury which van Gaal admits will make him unavailable for Man United’s run-in.
“I think, next season, he is prepared,” van Gaal told reporters this week.
“I don’t think Schweinsteiger shall play this season.”
There is also a chance Schweinsteiger will miss Euro 2016 as well but that’s something which van Gaal is more unsure about.
He added: “Maybe he is prepared for the European Championship, I cannot predict.
“It is possible, but then that is also in our favour because then he is fit for the new competition.”
To say Schweinsteiger’s season hasn’t gone to plan would be a bit of an understatement. His injury record at Bayern Munich always made it a risky signing but it was one which van Gaal took because of how much he can offer as both a player and a leader.
Unfortunately, injury has plagued his campaign right from the start and stopped him from becoming the influential player we all knew he could be for us. Typical really because we’ve desperately lacked leaders.
If Schweinsteiger comes back next season and suffers from the same problems then he’ll more than likely leave United the following year without his career at Old Trafford ever really getting underway.
