Neil Custis: Jose Mourinho will replace Louis van Gaal at Man United regardless of FA Cup

The Sun reporter Neil Custis says Jose Mourinho will join Manchester United next season even if Louis van Gaal wins the FA Cup.

Man United secured their place in the Cup final with a 2-1 win over Everton at Wembley last week but currently sit fifth in the Premier League table following some awful performances and results. Custis insisted that the decision to replace van Gaal with Mourinho has already been made.

“I’m sure the decision has been made and that Mourinho will come in next season,” Custis said.

“Everywhere he has gone he has achieved success. That suggests to me that he’s the golden ticket. I don’t think [the FA Cup semi-final win] should mask what we have witnessed over the last 18 months under LVG, which has been pretty poor.

“If we’d seen more of those performances over the last 18 months there would be no question over the last year of his contract. This business about bringing the youth, it was a necessity given the injuries. You would not have seen Marcus Rashford to the extent we have if they didn’t have injuries.

“Whatever happens from now until the end of the season, it won’t change what has happened in the last two years, or suggest it is going to be different next season, because he is so rigid in his ways and methods.”

There have been strong rumours suggesting Mourinho is already working on transfers at United and it is hard to believe that the club haven’t at least contacted the Portuguese manager. Van Gaal has an endearing character but he has overseen some dour football this term and it is clear that he is not the right man to lead United forward.

As for Custis, he is infamously the reporter van Gaal called fat after a press conference – take from that what you will when reading these rumours.
