Chris Smalling: David de Gea is the best goalkeeper in the world

Chris Smalling has hailed Manchester United teammate David de Gea as the best goalkeeper in the world.

De Gea has been in excellent form for Man United this season, most recently saving Romelu Lukaku’s penalty in the 2-1 win over Everton in the FA Cup semi-final last time out.

The Spaniard was recently named in the PFA Team of the Season and Smalling was full of praise for his colleague.

“We all know as players he is constantly showing that (he is the best in the world), and he’s stepping up in all the right positions and he’s been brilliant,” he said.

“It’s his reactions. They’re already celebrating and we’re a bit ‘Oh no’, but you know when you’ve got David behind you there’s a half chance he’s going to get a hand to it, or a foot to it, anything to it. He’s brilliant.”

If United do go on to make a success of their season, they will owe a lot to De Gea.

The keeper has almost won matches by himself over the course of the campaign and he seems to have cemented his status as the best in the world over Bayern Munich’s Manuel Neuer. The hope now is that United manage to keep hold of De Gea in the summer.
