Chris Smalling: Wayne Rooney has the “football brain” to succeed in midfield for Man United

Chris Smalling believes Wayne Rooney possesses the “football brain” needed to succeed in midfield for Manchester United.

Marcus Rashford’s excellent form has meant that Rooney has taken up a role in the middle of the park for Man United in recent weeks.

The United captain put in an excellent display there in the 2-1 win over Everton in the FA Cup semi-final last time out and Smalling backed Rooney to succeed in the position.

“Everyone knows he’s got the football brain to do that,” Smalling said.

“And the last couple of years he’s had to fill in in that role and you can see he can do that role, because he’s such a good footballer and so clever that no position fazes him. I think it adds another attacking player and a goalscorer, because Wayne Rooney‘s a goalscorer, and the more goalscorers we can get on the pitch is better for the team.”

Rooney undoubtedly has the knowhow, experience and technical ability to succeed in midfield but it remains to be seen whether he can do it against the very best sides.

Nevertheless, he was superb against Everton and he deserves the plaudits that are coming his way. Rooney is often written off but it is clear that he still offers a lot to the side.
