Jamie Carragher: Jose Mourinho would be an ‘upgrade’ on Louis van Gaal for Manchester United

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher believes Jose Mourinho would represent an “upgrade” on Louis van Gaal for Manchester United.

Man United have been strongly linked with a move for Mourinho, who was sacked by Chelsea earlier this term, in recent months.

Carragher believes supporters would back any decision to replace van Gaal with Mourinho and that United should pounce on the Portuguese while he is available.

“I don’t think the Manchester United fans would want him to stay even if they make the top four and win the FA Cup,” Carragher said.

“It’s a major decision. I think if they can get Jose Mourinho I would still do it because he’s an upgrade on Louis van Gaal. It wouldn’t be a case of van Gaal’s won the FA Cup and got Champions League, who can we get? It would have to be an upgrade on van Gaal and Jose Mourinho is that. The fact he’s available, I’d still do it.”

Van Gaal has reached the FA Cup final with United and he is still in the race for a top four finish in the Premier League but the football at Old Trafford has been dour, to say the least.

There are reservations about Mourinho’s character but United aren’t in a position to be picky and he represents the ‘safest bet’ in terms of getting the club back to the top. It would certainly be a shame to see him go elsewhere.
