Jose Mourinho is ‘close’ to replacing Louis van Gaal as manager of Manchester United, according to Marca.

Mourinho, who was sacked by Chelsea earlier this term, has been strongly linked with a move to Man United for several months.

Numerous reports in recent weeks have suggested that the Portuguese is already working on transfer targets ahead of a move, with Benfica’s Renato Sanches said to be the first of a number of signings at Old Trafford.

Marca have fanned the flames by claiming that United will also target Valencia’s Andre Gomes, who is said to be highly rated by Mourinho. In fact, Mourinho is reportedly of the belief that Gomes will ‘explode soon’.

Van Gaal has reached the FA Cup final with United and his side are still in the hunt for a top four finish in the Premier League but performances and results have largely been abysmal over the course of the campaign.

Mourinho’s reputation took a hit at Chelsea this season due to his off-field antics but the fact is that he has won trophies at every club he has managed. United aren’t in a position to be picky and Mourinho is the ‘safest bet’ in terms of getting the club back to the top.
