Guillem Balague: Man United interested in Atletico Madrid’s Saul Niguez

Spanish football expert Guillem Balague has claimed Manchester United are interested in Atletico Madrid’s Saul Niguez.

Niguez has enjoyed a fine campaign for Atletico this term, scoring nine goals in 42 appearances in all competitions for Diego Simeone’s side.

His most recent strike came in Atletico’s 1-0 win over Bayern Munich this week in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final clash.

Balague believes that Barcelona and Man United are in for the Spaniard.

“Saul has a buy-out clause of 45m euros,” Balague said.

“There is a clause since the David Villa transfer to Barcelona, a clause that says Barcelona can equal any offer and can take him.

“Barcelona are interested, and so are Manchester United. He belongs 40% to Jorge Mendes, and we’ll have to see. The last renewal offer from the club has been rejected by Saul, but the club will continue to negotiate.”

Niguez, 21, is a huge talent but United would find it hard to persuade the player to join them over Barcelona if it came down to it.

Of course, this is not the first time United have been linked with Niguez. Back in January, Balague said we had a €20m bid for Niguez rejected and separate reports said we sent a delegation to negotiate a deal for him but nothing materialised

Niguez’s father dismissed the United rumours at the time and the player himself said his biggest dream was to stay at Atletico, so I’m not sure why United would go back after a player who is clearly happy and who the club has no intention to sell.

That being said, United are definitely looking to plan for the future, with Benfica’s Renato Sanches, 18, also said to be closing in on a move to United.

Anthony Martial, Memphis Depay, Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, Luke Shaw, Timothy Fosu-Mensah and Marcus Rashford are all on the books at Old Trafford and the future of the club should be a bright one. That being said, perhaps supporters would prefer more of a short-term improvement as United look to take the next step.
