Paul Merson: Marcus Rashford will become a special player at Man United

Sky Sports pundit Paul Merson believes Marcus Rashford will become a very special player for Manchester United over the next few seasons.

Rashford quickly burst onto the scene at Man United this season and has already scored seven goals in 14 appearances since his debut on 25 February in a whirlwind few months.

His spectacular performances for United have led to questions over whether he should be considered as a wildcard for Roy Hodgson’s England squad in the Euros this summer and that’s a testament to how well he has done.

Speaking about Rashford’s goal against West Ham, Merson said the youngster reminded him of Dutch striker Marco van Basten and hailed him as a great talent.

“I think Rashford’s going to be a very very special player. His goal the other day, his movement was… seriously I haven’t seen movement like that for a long time,” he said.

“It reminded me of Van Basten if I’m honest.

“Seriously, his movement and for a kid that age to know what he was doing.

“He’s going to have bad games. Of course he is. He’s a young lad playing for a massive football club. I see enough just in that goal.

“That goal was better than the West Ham goal because of his movement. It was just phenomenal. I think he’s a great talent.”

Rashford has enjoyed a remarkable start to his career at Old Trafford but comparisons with a three time Ballon d’Or winner are a bit early to say the least, just like Anthony Martial‘s were with Thierry Henry. As with any youngster, it’s important he’s able to keep himself grounded while he’s under pressure in the first-team and he looks like he’s coping with it just fine.

His form makes it almost impossible for Louis van Gaal to leave him out of the side. It was feared that Rashford would be forced out wide to accommodate a returning Wayne Rooney up front but it’s brilliant to see him continue to start.

Merson doesn’t speak much sense as a pundit but Rashford is extremely exciting and it genuinely looks like United have unearthed a real talent.
