Chris Smalling named Man United’s Players’ Player of the Year

by Sam Peoples

Chris Smalling has been chosen as Manchester United’s Players’ Player of the Year.

The 26-year-old has transformed himself from a defensive liability into one of the Premier League’s best and most consistent defenders in an excellent transformation over the last 18 months.

He’s been able to stay pretty much injury free and built a consistent season off the back of that, bar some tepid performances after he came back from injury in the latter half of the year.

The fact United’s players chose Smalling is really an indicator of just how much influence he’s started to have on the team. We haven’t really had defensive leaders since Patrice Evra, Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic left the club but Smalling has started to really take control and lead by example.

There are a few players who would have deserved this award and Smalling is one of them. Well done Chris!
