Van Gaal’s side have suffered a disappointing season in the Premier League having been out of the title race since December but a top-four finish remains a slim possibility if Arsenal can beat beat Manchester City at the Etihad this weekend.
Rashford and Fosu-Mensah have blossomed since they were handed their debuts this campaign and summer signing Martial has proven he was definitely worth every penny of his £36m price tag. De Gea has also been vital for United and was recently named as the club’s 2016 Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year for an unprecedented third time in a row.
Talking about the club’s future, Collymore has advised van Gaal to move away from Sir Alex Ferguson’s structure.
“There needs to be a clear out, a new direction built around Rashford, Martial and De Gea,” he said.
“Three players, along with Fosu-Mensah who should be United mainstays for years to come, but I wonder if Van Gaal will really revolutionise anything or use Fergie’s Carrick, Moyes’ Fellaini and big time charlies like Depay to build a future?
“I think that last idea is very unpalatable for United fans and I understand why.”
The future is certainly bright at Old Trafford and we have plenty of young players who have got off to the best possible start in their careers this season.
It’s incredible to see home-grown talent shine as Rashford and Lingard work their way up the ranks at United as well as players who have been brought in such as Fosu-Mensah. They all need more guidance and development to cement their places in the first-team permanently but have all been hugely encouraging during the early stages this sesaon.
Martial has proven time and time again he is an exceptional talent and his performances in a disappointing campaign under van Gaal have underlined his quality as one of the world’s best youngsters. What a waste of money, not.
As for De Gea, he’s been absolutely phenomenal in between the sticks and has earned his rightful status as one of the best goalkeepers in the world alongside Bayern Munich’s Manuel Neuer. The hope now is that the club can convince him to stay at United for the coming years.
Looking around the club there are so many young players in the early stages or at the start of their careers and while Sir Alex Ferguson was accused of leaving an old squad in need of renewal, this current crop of players has bags of potential in it and we’ve started to see that already.
