Roy Keane: Manchester United must add players with character to their squad this summer

Roy Keane believes that Manchester United must sign players with character in the summer if they are to be successful moving forward.

Man United have been dismal at points this season, with defeats against the like of Norwich City and Bournemouth particularly devoid of any determination or steel.

Louis van Gaal’s side may yet end the season with an FA Cup win and a top four finish in the Premier League but Keane, who became a club legend during his time at United between 1993 and 2005, insisted that grit must be added to the squad this summer.

“If they are going to recruit again then whatever about good players, what United need is two or three characters so on their bad days they’re able to grind out results,” Keane said.

“Chelsea will be stronger next year, Arsenal, and Man City too with their new manager. It’s not going to get any easier. I don’t think they have enough characters in that team to get them back into winning league titles.”

United certainly could have used a player such as Keane this season. The Irishman was a colossus in the middle of the park, who regularly dragged United out of the mire. Perhaps the most famous example of this was the Champions League semi-final against Juventus in 1999, when an inspired Keane led United to a comeback win.

The midfield options at Old Trafford are meek in comparison, with the lack of Marouane Fellaini and Ander Herrera lacking the pure steel of Keane and players gone by, despite their best efforts. Keane is right in saying it is a problem that must be addressed in the summer.
