Manchester United to pay €80m overall for Renato Sanches

European football expert Andy Brassell says Manchester United are set to sign SL Benfica’s Renato Sanches in a deal which will be worth €80m overall.

Benfica’s president Luis Felipe Vieira was in Manchester last week finalising the payment schedule for Sanches and reports in the days following that back in his native Portugal suggested the 18-year-old was ready to complete his move to Man United.

An uncharacteristic bad performance from Sanches this weekend saw him sent off against Maritimo but Benfica ran out 2-0 winners and speaking about his future on BT Sport, Brassell indicated the deal will be similar to that of Anthony Martial when we signed him from AS Monaco.

He said: “It could be his last game as Dan Mason was saying on the commentary there. Luis Felipe Vieira, the president of Benfica, was in Manchester about ten days ago agreeing a schedule for the payment of the fee. It looks like it will be €40m up front and €40m in add-ons, a sort of similar deal to the Martial deal but it looks like Benfica are really going to cash in on a player who only made his first-team debut in October.”

It’s a mind blowing amount of money for somebody who is such a rookie from the Portuguese league but Premier League TV deals means English clubs are going to be put to the sword when it comes to transfer fees from here on in. As for the structure of it, Martial’s add-ons only kick into gear after he does the likes of scoring 20+ goals in a season or gets nominated for the Ballon d’Or and if he gets that good, then United will be the real winners.

Everything at this stage is pointing towards United completing the signing of Sanches and with just over a week until the season finishes, we might not have to wait much longer to find out.
