Boxer and Manchester United fan Anthony Crolla believes the club should let go of Louis van Gaal this summer.
Van Gaal has overseen a disappointing campaign at Man United this term but it may well end on a high note as the team are looking forward to an FA Cup final.
WBA Lightweight champion, and United season ticket holder, Crolla insisted that United should allow van Gaal to leave following the opportunity to win silverware.
“It has to be the end of van Gaal after the FA Cup final,” Crolla said.
“I’ve backed him a lot, longer than most people but most people want a change. He is a legend of the game but you don’t want to see people wanting him out or booing him out. So winning the FA Cup and bringing in some silverware is a nice way for him to go.
“It will be perfect for him to go out with an FA Cup final win. I just don’t want him to stay on if we scrape into the top four, win the FA Cup and then next season be another frustrating season again.
“I’m not a football manager but a lot of the fans on the terraces are questioning his decisions, we want a manager that we can put 100% faith in.”
Winning the FA Cup would be a great achievement but it is unlikely that United will be able to pair it with Champions League football, barring a surprising set of results on the final day of the Premier League season.
United are currently fifth in the table and are relying on Manchester City to lose against Swansea City at the weekend.
Van Gaal barely scraped into the top four last season and, considering the amount of money he has spent since taking charge, his tenure has not been good enough. Jose Mourinho, a proven, world-class manager, is said to be waiting in the wings to replace van Gaal at Old Trafford and United would be wise to bring him in.
