Man United vs Bournemouth: Three players who must start

by Sam Peoples

Manchester United’s game against Bournemouth on Sunday is a dead rubber unless Swansea can beat Manchester City because otherwise we can’t finish in the top four.

As both are being played at the same time, it is up to Man United to make sure we get the three points and are there to take advantage of any slip up Man City make.

With that in mind, here are three players who must start against Bournemouth.

Antonio Valencia

It’s been pleasantly surprising to see how well Valencia has played at right-back since returning from injury. He’s still not the 2010/11 Valencia but I’m not sure he ever will be again.

That being said, he’s been quietly impressive and one of our most consistent players in the last few games. As is always the case with Tony these days he’s certainly got to work on his final delivery but he’s at least getting himself into better positions. Now, if he can just improve his crossing (I might be dreaming here…)

Anthony Martial

There might be a temptation for Louis van Gaal to rest Martial ahead of next weekend’s FA Cup final but I just can’t see United offering any sort of threat without him on the pitch – he’s that important to our attack.

That performance against West Ham was so mature and experienced from Martial. He felt no pressure and dragged United back into the game on his own, only for United’s defence to collapse and let him down.

Maybe he shouldn’t play the full 90 minutes but Martial needs to start against Bournemouth.

Marcus Rashford

I was sitting there contemplating how our attack would look like without Rashford in it and it’s made me realise how dependent we are on the 18-year-old. Nobody offers what he does unless you take Martial out of position and then the same problem comes on the left-wing.

Rashford’s got to start for us. The FA Cup final is the priority but we can ill afford to rest our players, risk not winning and potentially miss out on the top four even if City lose to Swansea. We saw against Norwich how poor our attack is without Rashford and Martial, so both are going to have to start on Sunday.
