Manchester United fans react to England squad announcement

Manchester United fans have reacted with mixed emotions after the announcement of Roy Hodgson’s 26-man provisional England squad for the European Championships this summer.

Hodgson announced the squad on Monday, with Man United’s Marcus Rashford earning himself a surprise call-up alongside Wayne Rooney and Chris Smalling.

However, there was no room for Phil Jones or Michael Carrick, who have suffered disappointing seasons at Old Trafford. Supporters offered their views after the announcement:

Rashford plays with an intelligence and maturity that belies his age and he deserves to be, at least, on the stand-by list following an excellent rise to prominence at United over the course of the campaign.

But Carrick and Jones can have no quibbles with being left out. The former has been underwhelming in the middle of the park while the latter has proven to be injury-prone this term.

It is disappointing to not see more of a United contingent in the squad as the club has traditionally served the national side well over the years but the likes of Cameron Borthwick-Jackson and Rashford will be hopeful of maintaining a regular England spot soon enough.
