Manchester United send scouts to watch Sporting Lisbon’s Joao Mario – report

Manchester United scouts were present at Sporting Lisbon’s 4-0 win over Braga last week to watch Joao Mario, according to A Bola.

Man United have reportedly turned their attentions to Mario after seeing their prime target, Benfica’s Renato Sanches, agree a deal to move to Bayern Munich in the summer.

Midfielder Mario has enjoyed a fine campaign with Sporting, scoring seven goals in 42 appearances for the Portuguese side this season. He played the full 90 minutes as Sporting smashed Braga on Sunday and representatives from United were in the stands to watch:

United thought they had solved their midfield issues with the acquisitions of Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin last summer but both players have proven to be underwhelming in their debut seasons.

Meanwhile, Marouane Fellaini divides opinion among supporters and Michael Carrick is entering the twilight of his career.

It is clear that United must strengthen the position in the summer and bringing in Mario looks like it would be a step in the right direction. It should be an interesting window in terms of ins and outs at Old Trafford.
