Deco: Jose Mourinho is the perfect manager for Manchester United

Portuguese midfielder Deco believes Jose Mourinho is the perfect man to become Manchester United manager.

Deco worked under Mourinho during his reign at Porto and won the Champions League in 2004 whilst they were still both starting their careers as a player and manager.

Louis van Gaal recently said he is confident of fulfilling his three-year-contract at Old Trafford, but reports still suggest Mourinho will be replacing him this summer.

After missing out on Champions League football next season, Deco insists Mourinho is the man to take United back to winning ways.

“I don’t know if he’s going to United but, if it’s true, in my opinion he is the right man for the job,” he said.

“In this moment United needs to bring back all its history and I think Mourinho is the perfect coach to train United.

“I worked with Mourinho when he was starting in football. At that time we had fantastic players and one young coach like Mourinho giving us everything us he knows.”

Mourinho has had his eyes on the United job for a while, allegedly turning down positions at Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain since he was sacked by Chelsea in December, and we could make a big mistake by continuing with van Gaal whilst Mourinho is waiting in the wings.

Jose is a proven winner, he’s won silverware at every club he’s managed and could take United back to their winning ways, as Deco suggests. Of course, he doesn’t come without any flaws and we’re all consciously aware of those but with Mauricio Pochettino recently signing a contract extension committing his future to Tottenham Hotspur until 2021, we don’t have many options left in regards to appointing a new manager.

Van Gaal has clearly been unsuccessful at United by failing to secure a Champions League qualification for next season and even if we win the FA Cup at the weekend against Crystal Palace at Wembley, it’s difficult to look ahead with him still as manager.

On more than one occasion van Gaal has said United fans’ expectations are too high but we should be challenging for titles, not finishing outside of the top four. United are one of the biggest clubs in the world and with the amount of money he’s spent since he joined we shouldn’t be moving backwards.
