Wayne Rooney hints long-term future at Man United may be in midfield

Wayne Rooney has suggested his long-term future at Manchester United may be in midfield following his excellent performance there in the 3-1 win over Bournemouth on Tuesday.

Rooney scored one goal and assisted another in Man United’s final Premier League game of the season at Old Trafford.

The 30-year-old, who has spent the majority of his career up top, suggested that it is time to start considering the long-term possibility of playing in a deeper role for United.

“Certainly after the Euros I’m sure for next season that’s probably where I see myself playing,” he said.

“Sometimes you have to make choices in your career, at the minute it’s probably better for me to play deeper.”

Louis van Gaal‘s side have struggled going forward for large stretches of this season, although they did keep 18 clean sheets in the league.

Rooney, meanwhile, suffered his worst year in front of goal for United but he has flourished in a deeper role in recent weeks.

His critics will say that he is yet to be tested against a top, top side but Rooney has certainly got off to an excellent start in the position. The hope is that he can lead United to a FA Cup final win this weekend.
