Former Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen believes Ryan Giggs is a better option than Jose Mourinho to take over at Old Trafford this summer.
Mourinho, sacked by Chelsea earlier this season, is widely considered to be the front-runner to replace the under pressure van Gaal after he oversaw a disappointing fifth-placed finish in the Premier League.
But Meulensteen, who worked at Man United for six years under Sir Alex Ferguson, claimed that Giggs is a better bet than Mourinho if the club are to get back to the top.
“People say that Ryan has no managerial experience but the one thing they forget is that he might not be the finished article. He has more experience of Manchester United than many of the coaches that could come in. That is a big plus for him,” Meulensteen said.
“He knows the identity of the club and has been part of a successful period at the club for a long, long time. He would know what it takes to get United back to where they belong.”
Giggs is certainly United through-and-through but that in no way means that he will be a successful manager. He has next to no experience at the highest level and it would be a huge risk to appoint him as boss.
Gary Neville, too, learned under Ferguson but he failed miserably at Valencia this term. The likes of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Paul Ince have suffered similar fates after turning their hands to management.
United’s disastrous season means that they have no choice but to play it safe. Another campaign like this one could cut them adrift in terms of a long period of mediocrity. Mourinho is a world-class manager and one that clearly wants to join. It would be a huge oversight not to bring him in.
