Jesse Lingard: It’s a great feeling for Manchester United

Jesse Lingard insists it’s a great feeling to win after he scored a fantastic late-winner to help Manchester United defeat Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final at Wembley.

Jason Puncheon had put Palace ahead before a Juan Mata goal took the game to extra time and Lingard struck a fabulous volley to take United past Palace in the closing minutes of the game.

It was United’s first FA Cup win since 2004, taking them level with Arsenal as the most successful clubs in the competition’s history. Louis van Gaal also celebrated his first trophy in English football, and United’s first major honour since Alex Ferguson retired in 2013

Talking about the trophy, Lingard insists it’s a wonderful moment for the club to win it after so long.

“It’s an amazing feeling, we were behind and we won it,” he said.

“We haven’t been in the final for a long time and it’s a great feeling to win it. You can’t beat those feelings and it’s a great moment.

“I think next year I should be scoring over 15 goals a season. This was a normal game for me, Carrick and Rooney were guiding us through it and the team spirit came through today.”

United lost Marcus Rashford and Marcos Rojo to injury whilst Chris Smalling was sent off when he picked up an extra-time red card, the game looked like it was heading down hill, but Lingard’s goal was unbelievable and helped the players lift the trophy at the end of the night.

He couldn’t have had a better night at Wembley and it’s brilliant to see an academy graduate rise through the ranks at the club and prove themselves on the main stage.

The balled bounced up for him and he sent it whistling into the top-left corner before tearing off his shirt and racing towards the United end to celebrate with fans. It’s what dreams are made of.
