Ray Wilkins believes that Jose Mourinho is the right man to bring success back to Manchester United.
Mourinho is widely expected to be announced as the next manager of Man United this week after Louis van Gaal was relieved of his duties at Old Trafford on Monday.
However, there have been reports that some within the United hierarchy have reservations over Mourinho’s style of football and his off-field antics. But former United midfielder Wilkins, who worked with Mourinho at Chelsea, backed the Portuguese to succeed at the club.
“If they are going for Jose then he is the right person to carry them forward,” Wilkins said.
“He has been extremely successful wherever they have been and I’m sure he will get them playing in the right manner as well.”
Mourinho’s reputation certainly took a hit at Chelsea earlier this season as he oversaw a tumultuous period, full of misbehaviour and poor football.
But the fact is that he is a world-class manager who has enjoyed great success over the majority of his career and United would have been unwise to ignore his availability.
Van Gaal’s tenure was a huge disappointment and sticking with him for another year would have been disastrous. Mourinho will now have the summer to mould United into a successful team and there will be much more optimism than if van Gaal was still in charge.
