Ryan Giggs offered chance to stay at Manchester United – report

Ryan Giggs has been offered the chance to stay at Manchester United despite the club sacking Louis van Gaal on Monday, according to the Manchester Evening News.

Giggs had been fulfilling a role as assistant manager under van Gaal since the Dutchman arrived at Old Trafford in 2014.

The club’s original plan had been for Giggs to replace van Gaal after the latter’s contract expired next year but his premature exit following a disappointing campaign has changed the situation. Jose Mourinho is now widely expected to be named as the new manager of the club this week.

It is not immediately clear where Giggs would fit in under Mourinho but United are keen to keep their all-time record appearance maker at Old Trafford.

Giggs would like the top job at United someday but he is said to be weighing up whether to gain experience elsewhere first.

The debate will rage on over whether Giggs should stay or go, but if he did leave, it would be a great shame to see his 29-year association with United come to an end. But that being said, he cannot be expected to be trusted with the manager job at the club if he doesn’t gain experience beforehand.
