David Beckham has declared that he is a huge fan of Jose Mourinho ahead of the Portuguese’s imminent arrival at Manchester United.
Louis van Gaal was sacked as manager of Man United on Monday and Mourinho is widely expected to be named as the Dutchman’s successor this week.
Beckham, who famously wore the No.7 shirt at United during his playing days, believes that United supporters will waste no time in warming to their new manager.
When asked about van Gaal’s departure, Beckham said: ”Unfortunately this is how football is.
“But there’s no disputing Jose is one of the best managers in football. I love Jose. I think he’s an incredible manager, a great person, and he’s passionate about the game.
“The English public love him. The fans love seeing him on the sideline, they love his character.”
Mourinho often cultivates a siege mentality at clubs he manages, creating a sense of ‘us against the world’ and building a relationship with fans as a result.
United have gone from being one of the most revered clubs in the world to a meek shadow of their former self and it will be exciting to see how Mourinho goes about getting them back to the top.
A summer of incomings and outgoings is expected, with the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and John Stones linked with moves to United. The mood surrounding Old Trafford is certainly a lot more optimistic than it was with van Gaal in charge.
