Jose Mourinho to Manchester United: When will he become manager?

by Sam Peoples

In my eyes, Jose Mourinho to Manchester United has been a case of when and not if for a couple of months now and with Louis van Gaal being sacked on Monday, everything is now set for it to happen. An announcement is expected at some point this week.

After dithering for months to sack van Gaal, Man United are moving quickly and taking steps to get Mourinho in as soon as possible. It’s refreshing to see after so much frustration towards Ed Woodward and co. for taking so long to make a decision.

When will Mourinho be announced? Ed Woodward is set to meet Mourinho and his agent Jorge Mendes within the next 48 hours to finalise his contract. Once that is finalised and signed, an official confirmation will be the only thing left to do.

So, by all accounts, we should expect to see Mourinho standing next to Woodward in an official unveiling picture before the end of this week so long as there are no major delays or complications with his contract.

I’ll be delighted to see Mourinho as United manager now but it’s been one hell of a morale journey for me over the last three years when it comes to Jose. When Sir Alex retired, the last person on earth who I wanted to replace him was Mourinho because of his reputation and everything that came with it.

Three years down the line having seen what David Moyes and van Gaal have done to United, there is nobody I’d rather have in place than Mourinho. As a club we’ve backed ourselves into a corner which currently only Jose looks capable of getting us out of in any sort of convincing fashion.

There are no guarantees it will work out under Mourinho but after the abject failure of Moyes and the disparaging football under van Gaal, we’re certainly better placed to rebuild under Jose. Let’s see where the next leg of the journey takes us.
