Manchester United’s Matteo Darmian included in 30-man provisional Italy squad for European Championships

Manchester United’s Matteo Darmian has been included in Italy’s provisional 30-man squad for the European Championships this summer.

Darmian makes the squad alongside the likes of Gianluigi Buffon, Giorgio Chiellini, Leonardo Bonucci and Andrea Barzagli.

But the group will have to be cut to 23 by boss Antonio Conte by the end of the month ahead of the Euros.

Darmian was a regular starter for Italy when he joined Man United from Torino last summer but his stock has plummeted following a mediocre debut campaign at Old Trafford.

The full-back has not been helped by injuries and being moved around the back four by Louis van Gaal but he will have been disappointed not to make an impact this term.

Unfortunately, it looks like Darmian has been one of a number of players affected by van Gaal’s negative tactics and it is one of the reasons why the Dutchman has been sacked. The form of Ander Herrera, Juan Mata, Morgan Schneiderlin and Memphis Depay has also gone downhill under the Dutchman’s reign. Darmian, like the rest of the squad, will be hoping for better as Jose Mourinho closes in on replacing van Gaal at United.
