Jose Mourinho wants to sign at least four players as he prepares to begin his reign as Manchester United manager, according to the Manchester Evening News.
Mourinho is expected to be named as Man United’s new manager this week following the sacking of Louis van Gaal. According to the MEN, the Portuguese manager has prioritised adding a right midfielder, a centre-forward, a central midfielder and a centre-back to his squad as he looks to guide United back to the top.
Players such as Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Everton’s John Stones and Sporting Lisbon’s Joao Mario have been linked with moves to Old Trafford in recent weeks. Mourinho is keen to wrap up deals early in a bid to give new arrivals as much time as possible to settle in.
That being said, it is clear that improvements need to be made and Mourinho is going to waste no time in getting new arrivals in. Far too often, United have dithered in the transfer market before making slow starts to the campaign but that should be different this year.
For me, our priority is almost certainly a new striker. We missed out on the Champions League on goal difference and finished the season with our lowest ever goals tally in the Premier League. We need a new goalscorer but that’s not to say signing a new centre-back to partner Chris Smalling isn’t important, as is bringing in a pacy right-winger who can offer some real threat from that side.
All in all, I do think United’s squad is four players short of being able to challenge on all fronts. If Mourinho can plug those holes and not sell anybody he doesn’t want to, we’ll be in a strong position to compete next season.
