Chris Smalling praises Marcus Rashford after spectacular England debut

Chris Smalling insists Marcus Rashford‘s spectacular England debut came as no surprise to the rest of the squad.

The youngster collected the man of the match award after scoring 138 seconds into a dream international debut to help England in a 2-1 victory over Australia at Sunderland’s Stadium of Light.

His rise to the top has been described as a fairytale with the Mancunian striker breaking into Manchester United’s first-team, winning the FA Cup and becoming England’s youngest goal scoring debutant in only 92 days.

Speaking about Rashford, Smalling claims he’s impressed plenty of players in training with his threat and finishing.

“I was so happy for him,” his said.

“I think nobody is surprised at him any more (given) the fact he has hit the ground running with obviously United and (Friday night).

“I think a lot of the lads have been very impressed with him in training because he has been that threat and his finishing has been quality.

“I don’t think any of us were surprised and it’s great to see him just keep kicking on from each stage he has been doing this season.”

He’s scored nine goals in 19 appearances across all competitions and with a fine display on Friday night earning a standing ovation from England fans, he may have just earned his place in Roy Hodgson’s final 23-man squad for Euro 2016.

Rashford has knocked down all expectations of him this season and has grasped every opportunity given to him by Louis van Gaal and Hodgson. He proved himself and took centre stage for England showing he’s definitely one for the future.

His inclusion in the England squad came as a surprise as Danny Welbeck suffered a long-term knee injury but he’s proven his potential in the best possible way and I’d be surprised if he didn’t make the final cut for the squad, which will be announced on Tuesday.
