Sir Alex Ferguson and Edwin van der Sar reunited at Champions League final

Edwin van der Sar has shared a picture with his former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson after the pair were reunited at last week’s Champions League final.

Ferguson signed van der Sar from Fulham in 2005 and the Dutchman went on to become one of Man United’s greatest ever goalkeepers.

Van der Sar was part of a formidable United defence which included Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand and he saved Nicolas Anelka’s penalty to win the Champions League against Chelsea in 2008. The 45-year-old caught up with Ferguson at the San Siro as Real Madrid defeated Atletico Madrid on penalties to win their 11th Champions League title:

Van der Sar cemented an iconic status at United over the course of his career at the club and his replacement, David de Gea, now looks to be doing the same following some world-class performances at Old Trafford.

Meanwhile, Ferguson is enjoying retirement having quit as United boss in 2013.

The picture of them both will serve to remind supporters of one of United’s greatest ever periods but the hope is that Jose Mourinho is able to bring back a winning mentality to the club next season.
