Ed Woodward has claimed that Marcus Rashford has a “great future ahead of him” after the youngster signed a new deal at Manchester United.
Rashford committed his future to Man United on Monday by signing a deal which will keep him at the club until at least 2020, with the option to extend for a further year. The 18-year-old was superb during his debut 2015/16 season, scoring eight goals despite only making his senior bow in February.
Cameron Borthwick-Jackson, too, signed a new contract following a similarly impressive breakthrough campaign. Woodward was full of praise for Rashford following the news.
“Marcus is a naturally talented footballer with great potential,” Woodward said.
“He has taken his chances well and has integrated into the first team very quickly. I am delighted that Marcus has signed a new contract, he is at the right club to continue his development. He is still very young and we need to be patient but he is developing in the right way and we believe he has a great future ahead of him.”
United have always been a club who values its young players and it has been superb to see Rashford and Borthwick-Jackson rise through the ranks before flourishing in the first team.
Louis van Gaal’s tenure at United went down as a resounding failure but his handling of young players was undoubtedly a highlight of his reign.
The hope now is that Rashford and Borthwick-Jackson are afforded the opportunities to develop under Jose Mourinho.
