Jose Mourinho is the “only man” for Manchester United, according to former Republic of Ireland and Chelsea midfielder Damien Duff.
Months of speculation were brought to an end last week when Man United officially confirmed Mourinho as Louis van Gaal’s successor at Old Trafford.
Duff knows Mourinho well having won the Premier League title with him while the pair were at Chelsea and the Irishman insisted that his former boss will take United back to the top.
Asked whether United would challenge for the title next season under Mourinho, Duff said: ”A million percent, without doubt.
“I’m not saying it’s guaranteed success because it’s a tough league next year with all the top managers flooding to the Premier League.
“I think with what’s gone on at United for the last three years, he’s the only man for the job.”
Duff also expressed his confusion that it took so long for United to officially appoint Mourinho.
He said: ”The fact that it took so long, possibly because they got to the FA Cup final, I thought was madness. They were humming and hawing about it and he’s the only man for the job, he’s a top coach, a top manager and has charm and charisma – something they haven’t had there.”
United supporters have been forced to put up with mediocrity for too long under van Gaal and David Moyes and Mourinho’s arrival should signal the return of a winning mentality at Old Trafford.
Mourinho’s methods can sometimes be divisive but he always has one thing and one thing only in mind, namely, winning.
It will be exciting to see how Mourinho shapes the squad for a title challenge next season, with the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic, John Stones and Raphael Varane all linked with moves to the club.
