Manchester United’s David de Gea looked hard at work in training with the Spanish national side as he prepares for the European Championships this summer.

De Gea was included in Spain’s 23-man squad for the tournament following a brilliant 2015/16 campaign for Man United in which he arguably established himself as the finest goalkeeper in the world.

But he still has to convince Spain coach Vincent Del Bosque of his qualities as the 65-year-old has often preferred Iker Casillas in-between the sticks for his side. De Gea looked focused while training this week:

The decision to omit De Gea for so long was a bizarre one from Del Bosque and it reflected his stubbornness in terms of removing the ‘old guard’.

Of course, Spain have enjoyed huge success with the likes of Casillas in the side but you would think that the time is now to pass the baton onto De Gea.

The 25-year-old is widely considered to be the best in the world in his position and Casillas’ performances have steadily declined in recent months. It will be interesting to see who lines up when the tournament kicks off in earnest.
