Bastian Schweinsteiger hails Jose Mourinho as one of the best coaches in the world

Bastian Schweinsteiger has hailed Jose Mourinho as one of the best coaches in the world following his appointment as Louis van Gaal’s successor at Manchester United last week.

Mourinho was shown around Man United’s Carrington training ground on Monday and he will now be tasked with bringing success back to Old Trafford following a largely underwhelming 2015/16 campaign under van Gaal.

Meanwhile, Schweinsteiger has barely played this year due to injury but he was still included in Germany’s squad for the European Championships this summer. The midfielder was full of praise for Mourinho in a recent interview.

“I think we did a great job getting Jose Mourinho to Manchester, one of the best coaches – if not the best – in European football,” Schweinsteiger said.

“But we will get to the topic of Manchester United later. We are all happy that we got a coach like that, but right now the players are thinking more about the Euros not about United.”

Schweinsteiger had a disappointing debut season at United and he will be one of a number of players hoping to start anew at the club under Mourinho’s reign. The likes of Morgan Schneiderlin, Ander Herrera and Memphis Depay, too, failed to deliver consistently under van Gaal.

It seems as if Mourinho is looking to add quality depth in midfield, with Valencia’s Andre Gomes among those linked with a move to the club.

Schweinsteiger, Schneiderlin, Michael Carrick and Marouane Fellaini each have their flaws and a new player may invigorate things but there is no reason why Mourinho can’t improve the performances of players already at the club.
