Real Madrid give up David de Gea pursuit

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez has given up hope of signing Manchester United’s David de Gea, according to reports.

De Gea was close to a move to Madrid on the final day of the Spanish transfer window last year but a deal collapsed due to late paperwork.

The Spaniard eventually signed a new deal at Man United before putting in a number of top performances over the course of the 2015/16 campaign.

There had been rumours that Madrid would revive their interest in De Gea but manager Zinedine Zidane is instead happy to continue with Keylor Navas as the club’s No.1 next season following some impressive displays.

De Gea is arguably United’s only world-class player and keeping him would be a huge boost for the team as they prepare to begin life under Mourinho.

Of course, anything can happen between now and the end of the summer transfer window but the initial signs have been good. In any case, De Gea will be focused on impressing for Spain at the European Championships.
