Wayne Rooney: I will never play for another Premier League club

by Sam Peoples

Wayne Rooney has said he will never play for another Premier League club other than Manchester United or Everton.

The 30-year-old has spent over a decade at Man United and his testimonial will take place on 3 August against his former club Everton at Old Trafford where all the proceeds will be donated to charities.

Speaking about his upcoming testimonial, Rooney said

“For me there could not be a more special testimonial match.

“Manchester United and Everton are the only clubs I have played for as a professional footballer. I am happy to say now that, whatever may happen in the future, I will never play for another Premier League club.

“I owe United and Everton everything for giving me my footballing opportunities. Through the Wayne Rooney Foundation.

“I want to put something back, and say a heartfelt thanks to everyone at these great clubs who helped me in my career.

“Everton and United, along with my family, gave me the support and opportunity to help me achieve my goals and dreams.”

I’d have rather have heard Rooney say he’ll never play for another Premier League club a few years ago instead of him pushing for a move to Manchester City and Chelsea, but maybe I’m just being picky.

I don’t think any other club other than Everton would be interested in Rooney at this stage of his career either so it’s a pretty safe thing to rule himself out of joining another one. Call me cynical but I’m not seeing much value in Rooney saying this.

Rooney will become our record goalscorer next year under Jose Mourinho and, who knows, maybe he’ll re-find some of his best form under the Portuguese manager and I certainly hope he does but in terms of this showing his loyalty to United, that bond was broken for me a long time ago and this doesn’t change anything.
