Robert Pires: Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford will shine for Manchester United

by Tanveer Arayan

Former Arsenal star Robert Pires has backed Manchester United duo Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial to make a massive impact for France and England at Euro 2016 this summer.

Martial scored 11 goals in 31 appearances during his first campaign in the Premier League even though he was played on the wing for the majority of the season.

His injury in the warm-up against FC Midtjylland in the Europa League allowed Marcus Rashford to take his opportunity by scoring two goals in a 5-1 victory making him the club’s youngest-ever goalscorer in a European competition.

Rashford then went on to score two against Arsenal and assist the third in a 3-2 win in his Premier League debut, score the only goal in the Manchester derby at the Etihad, score the pivotal goal in Man United’s FA Cup quarter-final success and even score just minutes into his international debut.

Speaking about their futures, Pires insists they both have the mentality to succeed at the European competition.

“When Rashford landed that double against my old club I took notice straight away,” he said.

“He’s young but looks like an international striker to me. Marcus is what you call a ‘real striker’ – he scores with his right foot, his left…and with his head.

“And for me he has the mentality to succeed on the international stage.

“In my book, maybe Martial should start. He is very important to France. He’s young, too, but is coming off a very good season at Manchester United and I think he can do well.

“The French team is all about the 23-strong squad and not just the biggest names like Paul Pogba and Antoine Griezmann. And Martial can make a big impact.”

The two youngsters have have a dream season at Man United and this looks to be just the start as they try to extend their reputation farther at Euro 2016.

There’s no doubt they’ll both achieve incredible achievements in their career and I’m sure Jose Mourinho will have them in mind when he plans his overhaul of the squad next season.
