Two Manchester United players were in Euro 2016 action on Sunday but unfortunately for Paddy McNair, he didn’t have a game to remember at all.
The 21-year-old was substituted by Michael O’Neill at half-time due to a change of tactics but it failed to help Northern Ireland who succumbed to a 1-0 defeat. Having played a crucial role in their qualifying campaign, McNair will be hoping for more in the second game.
On the other hand, Bastian Schweinsteiger had just about the best cameo performance he could have hoped for. The midfielder came on with only a few minutes to help Germany see out a 1-0 win over Ukraine but made the perfect impact by scoring with aplomb after a flowing counter-attack.
To say Schweinsteiger’s debut season was underwhelming is an understatement but it’s great to see him scoring, and smiling, after spending so much time on the sidelines with injuries. Hopefully we’ll see more of that Bastian next season under Jose Mourinho and I’m convinced he’s still got something in his tank.
