Bastian Schweinsteiger’s future will be discussed with Jose Mourinho after Euro 2016

Bastian Schweinsteiger will clarify his situation at Old Trafford with Jose Mourinho after the Euros according to Germany manager Joachim Low.

Schweinsteiger, the German national team captain, earned a place in Loew’s squad and has repaid the manager’s faith in him with a marvellous goal off the bench against Ukraine last weekend.

There is speculation regarding his future at Old Trafford but Loew was quick to say he knows nothing about it and all will be sorted out after the Euros between Schweinsteiger and Mourinho.

“I prefer to get my information straight from the horse’s mouth,” Low said.

“Bastian and I exchanged thoughts about several things in the past few days, but we talked about his position and his fitness. We had no room for transfers in those talks.

“At this point, it does not interest me. Bastian will clarify his situation with his new coach after the European Championships. To me, he appears to be very relaxed.”

Schweinsteiger endured a difficult first season at Old Trafford despite showing glimpses of his commanding self in the opening half of the season. Two injuries – one after another – in the new year ruled out the chances of his first season at United being seen as a success.

Mourinho, infamously, likes to get older and more experienced players on his side as he tries to gain the squad’s trust from the outset. A new Michael Carrick deal is a sign of this and it is possible that he keeps Schweinsteiger around for another year to ensure he has the leadership, experience and numbers to compete in all three domestic competitions along with a gruelling Europa League schedule.

If Schweinsteiger can continue his good form with Germany and proves he is fit enough to be counted on at United, Mourinho will have no problem keeping him around to man his midfield next season.
