Hans-Joachim Watzke: We have decided to keep Henrikh Mkhitaryan at Borussia Dortmund next season

Borussia Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke insists the German club have decided to keep Henrikh Mkhitaryan next season.

His contract expires in June 2017 and has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United to work under new boss Jose Mourinho.

Mkhitaryan’s agent, Mino Raiola, confirmed earlier in the week that the 27-year-old wants to play at Old Trafford next season but it looks like Dortmund will be keeping the American midfielder.

Speaking about his future, Watzke claimed the club have discussed the situation and will tie him down at the Westfalenstadion.

“We at the club actively discussed the option of parting ways with Henrikh Mkhitaryan ahead of time, and we decided that he should stay at BVB also next season,” he said.

Mkhitaryan would be a great addition to the squad under Mourinho but it looks like we’ll have to wait until his contract expires to see any further movement on the situation as Dortmund would like him to see out the rest of his contract.

He’s enjoyed a spectacular season, scoring 23 goals and registering 32 assists across all competitions. We absolutely need a right-winger of his quality at the club and Ed Woodward will have to place a solid bid if he wants to change their decision.

We expect plenty of rumours to continue as the summer approaches and we’ll be keeping an eye on the situation as Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Breel Embolo are also said to be on Mourinho’s radar.
