Marek Hamsik: Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney is still world-class

Napoli’s Marek Hamsik believes that Manchester United captain Wayne Rooney is still a world-class player.

Rooney was criticised at points during the 2015/16 campaign due to a dip in form and some of his critics went as far to say that Man United would be better off without him in the side.

But, in a new midfield role, Rooney impressed in the latter stages of last season and he has put in a couple of top performances for England at Euro 2016. Hamsik’s Slovakia side are taking on England tonight and the forward was full of praise for Rooney.

“I admire his playing style a lot. He is a world‑class player,” Hamsik said.

“The English team is going through a big change in regard to the players. There is a new generation coming through and there is a perfect blend of young and old.

“I am not sure if there is a player with the same characteristics as me. In the past the press has often compared me to Steven Gerrard but I don’t know if that is true or not.”

There is no doubt that Rooney is not the player he once was but he has adjusted his game in recent months and his class has shone through.

Rooney has impressed in midfield, although he is yet to be tested by top class opposition, and you’d think that all the signs are there for him to continue in the middle of the park in the future.

But Rooney’s versatility has always been one of his strengths and new United boss Jose Mourinho will be glad to have a player of the 30-year-old’s ability in his squad.
