Stuart Pearce believes Ryan Giggs should stay under Jose Mourinho at Manchester United

Stuart Pearce believes Ryan Giggs should work under Mourinho for at least two years given the volatile nature of football management.

The Manchester United legend’s future at the club has been under increasing scrutiny since the appointment of Mourinho with reports suggesting the Portuguese boss was unwilling to offer him the assistant manager’s role at the club.

A role liaising between the U21s and the first-team was mentioned but many suggest Giggs would be better off branching out and starting his own managerial career.

Speaking about Giggs, he believes the Welshman should stay at the club and learn under Mourinho.

“If I was advising Ryan I would probably tell him to stay in the world of Mourinho for two years, I wouldn’t be in any rush to take a manager’s job,” he said.

“I would soak up the experience of Mourinho… it’s a volatile profession at the moment.

“Probably the best advice he’d ever get is from someone like Alex Ferguson.

“He will probably tell him exactly the same – get as experienced as you can and then a job will be out there for you.”

Giggs has worked as an assistant under United’s previous two managers and has gained plenty of experience from two coaches with such different backgrounds. From David Moyes’ work with Everton and Louis van Gaal‘s work with the likes of Barcelona and Bayern Munich, they both would have offered plenty of insight to the 42-year-old.

Jose Mourinho is arguably one of the top three managers in the world at present and Pearce has a point when he says the experience working under such a coach will help him in the future. There is a belief, however, that if Giggs is not ready to manage a club yet given his lengthy playing career and years working under Alex Ferguson, Moyes and Van Gaal then he will never be.

Both arguments have merit but a lot will depend on the role offered by Mourinho and whether a job in another club’s dugout is enough to convince the former United winger.
