Timothy Fosu-Mensah appears keen to keep fit ahead of Manchester United’s important pre-season tour games based on his instagram activity in recent days.
The Dutch defender was drafted into Louis van Gaal‘s side late into last season but did well in the roles he was asked to play in. He featured at right-back, which is his most natural position, left-back and centre-back and was immediately rewarded for his performances with a new deal as soon as Jose Mourinho was named as Man United’s new manager.
One of the criticisms levelled at Mourinho has been his lack of trust in young players but players like Fosu-Mensah, Adnan Januzaj, Marcus Rashford and Memphis Depay will be keen to gain the trust of the man who will manage United for at least another three years.
Fosu-Mensah’s versatility can be likened to that of Cesar Azpilicueta, who became a star under Mourinho at Chelsea and was relied heavily on in several positions by the Portuguese manager. Likewise, the young players mentioned above know there will be chances on the wings under Mourinho that were not always there under Louis van Gaal.
Many of the reports that emerged once Van Gaal was let go from his position at the club suggest the younger players were not entirely happy with his treatment of them and there is a sense that chances are on their way under Mourinho and the club, its fans and its players both young and old are ready to usher in a new era at Old Trafford.
