Ryan Giggs set for Manchester United talks with Jose Mourinho next week – report

Ryan Giggs is set to discuss his future at Manchester United with new manager Jose Mourinho and could leave the club after almost three decades at Old Trafford.

He has come to symbolise much of what United are about; youth, vigour, pace. Yet after the appointment of Mourinho as Louis van Gaal‘s replacement, his future has been incredibly uncertain.

The Mirror report Giggs will meet with Mourinho for the first time after he returns from holiday next week. He has been spending time in Spain following a turbulent season as van Gaal’s assistant and an FA Cup win thanks to Jesse Lingard‘s late winner.

Giggs sought a front-line managerial role when the sacking of Louis van Gaal was announced and Mourinho was appointed as his successor but the Welshman has been left considering his future. It is suggested that he was offered to define his own role within the Academy set-up, now controlled by his Class of ’92 teammate Nicky Butt but it was not enough for Giggs.

He has been linked with multiple managerial roles, including at Celtic and Nottingham Forest, but those are unlikely to have substance. Instead, it is possible the ex-winger will take a break from management and football, having been playing or managing for his entire life.

United return for pre-season training on July 7th, with players coming in for independent tests from July 1st, and the situation should be sorted before that happens to ensure the smoothest of takeovers for Mourinho and his new team, who are yet to be announced.

Should Giggs leave in the coming week, it will be a sad day for the club. Off-field matters have decreased the mighty status he carries, but that should not let the outstanding career be forgotten, a career stretching over more than two decades.
