Marcus Rashford was England’s best player in Iceland defeat…with 7 minute performance

by Sam Peoples

England crashed out of Euro 2016 with a 2-1 defeat to Iceland on Monday night and the embarrassment will envelope all the players involved for a long time to come, rightly so, but Marcus Rashford be coming home with his head held high.

Roy Hodgson finally brought Rashford on in the 86th minute and the 18-year-old did more in seven minutes than all of England’s other strikers did in the full 90 minutes. He ran at Iceland, he did so with pace and verve and you could see the defence had no idea what to do about it – after all, they’d had Sturridge, Kane, Vardy and Rooney in their pockets for the full 90 minutes.

At a time when England had nothing to lose, Rashford stood out like a diamond in the rough when no other player had the cojones to try anything. It was embarrassing to see all of England’s established players struggling to even complete a three yard pass when you’ve got Rashford coming on, grabbing the bull by its horns and trying to instigate a bit of magic himself.

England fans will be furious at what they saw against Iceland and rightly so. We’ve crashed out of another major tournament with a limp performance but Rashford showed exactly the same fearlessness which made him such a hit with Manchester United fans in his breakout 2016 season. I can’t wait to see him working under Jose Mourinho next season.
