Manchester United defender Chris Smalling had reportedly injured himself while on holiday in Indonesia.

The Englishman was taken to hospital after picking up food poisoning resulting in him fainting, there was a photo released on social media showing his rough condition and his full name written on an apparent hospital document.

He was ever-present in Roy Hodgson’s England side at Euro 2016, but was sent home as they suffered a disappointing 2-1 defeat at the Allianz Riviera.

Smalling was enjoying his break after the intense European Championship, but it looks like his summer couldn’t get any worse.

Man United’s official statement:

“Manchester United can clarify Chris Smalling has had food poisoning during his holiday which resulted in him fainting on Sunday.

The 26-year-old defender was taken to the hospital and is now feeling fine.

Smalling is currently on vacation following his time with England at Euro 2016 before reporting back for pre-season training later this month.”

There were fears over his future at the club as his performances were very inconsistent at times, but he has done brilliantly to turn his career around under Louis van Gaal last season.

He will be a crucial part of Jose Mourinho’s plans at Old Trafford as the team head into pre-season training and it’s good to know the injury wasn’t anything serious.

Smalling will be linking up with Mourinho’s new signing Eric Bailly in the centre of defence and will be hoping to form a great partnership to build on our impressive defensive showing from last season.
