Ashley Young‘s time at Manchester United has been filled with ups and downs from forcing his way into Louis van Gaal‘s plans to suffering injuries at terrible times and being moved to positions that may not have befit his playing style.
With another manager comes further speculation about the 30-year-old’s future and whether or not he can convince Jose Mourinho to keep him around and even make it into his preferred XI.
United have reinforced in the left and right wide attacking midfield positions in the last two years with signings such as Anthony Martial, Memphis Depay and Henrikh Mkhitaryan. The emergence of Marcus Rashford and Adnan Januzaj have also resulted in there being more competition for places in United’s team.
Yet, none of them have been ever able to move clear of Young in the pecking order and there are suggestions he might have a place in Mourinho’s plans.

Like many of his teammates, he has taken to Twitter to declare he is ready to get to work. Mourinho insists on his wingers being willing to work back and defend and Young is more than capable of offering this. He has speed on the counter to, which should bode well for him during pre-season.
Unlike his English compatriots, he did not represent his national team and will play a part in the earliest fixtures United are a part of in China and throughout their pre-season. It will give him a head-start and a chance to work closely with and impress Mourinho with little pressure given the stature of the matches.
This will also help given the fact that his main competition on the left wing is possibly Anthony Martial, who is still away on international duty and will need a break before he joins up with the rest of the squad ahead of the new season.
Young constantly defies the odds and given all the angles mentioned above, he will surely use one of them to give himself a competitive advantage ahead of some of the younger players in the squad.
