Ryan Giggs has backed Jose Mourinho as one of the world’s best managers following his appointment at Manchester United.
The Portuguese boss was appointed as Louis van Gaal‘s successor last month and was finally unveiled to the media on Tuesday. He will also be hiring long-term assistant manager Rui Faria and after rejecting the club’s demoted role Giggs decided to leave Old Trafford to pursue his management career.
Speaking about Mourinho, Giggs insists he’s a proven manager and will help the club win trophies.
“Jose Mourinho is obviously a top, top manager. United are always about winning trophies and he’s proven,” he said.
“I’ve never been one to look back, I always look forward.
“Ultimately, I want to be a manager in my own right. I’ve had a great apprenticeship playing under Sir Alex Ferguson and then working under Louis van Gaal in the last couple of years. I’ve really enjoyed it.”
There were calls for Giggs to become manager, but throwing him in the deep end and expecting him to rebuild one of the biggest club’s in the world at the start of his management career would have been unfair.
Mourinho will be looking to get the club back to the top after their disappointing fifth-placed finish in the Premier League last season and will be targeting the Champions League next year.
It’s sad to see Giggs end his 29-year association with the club, but it was the right time to leave if he wanted a chance of managing the club in the future.
