Manchester United players want Juan Mata to remain at the club – report

Juan Mata might be on the way out the door of Manchester United but not if his teammates have anything to do with it, according to Manchester Evening News.

The Spaniard has been at Man United since Jose Mourinho sold him to the club when he was the manager of Chelsea despite the diminutive midfielder winning back-to-back Player of the Year awards at the club.

Having won the fans over with three early and impressive signings, MEN suggests Mourinho risks upsetting his players if he is to sell Mata, who has become a cult hero at the club and, quite obviously, in the dressing room if reports are to be believed.

It would be an understatement to suggest that Mata is held in high regard but both fans and players at the club. His own teammates Luke Shaw referred to him at the nicest player he has ever met and United fans around the world can’t help but fawn over the likeable character that he is.

However, Mourinho plays a style of football that requires speed and strength on the flanks and Mata might fall victim to his lack of physicality under the new United boss. United are blessed with depth on the left and right of attacking midfielder with new signing Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Anthony Martial the most likely of starters under the Portuguese manager.

Wayne Rooney might play at number ten but it remains to be seen how much the United captain has left in the tank after a poor Euro 2016. Mata might compare favourably to Oscar, who was a regular at Chelsea under Mourinho and a player with creativity such as Mata might suit the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and whoever the two holding midfielders turn out to be in Mourinho’s system with the Spanish attacker there to take the ball and make things happen in the final third.

It’s definitely a potential crunch point for Mourinho and one which I think can only have one outcome where we see Juan leave the club. If he sold him as a double player of the year at Chelsea, why wouldn’t he sell him now? His opinion on Mata would have had to completely change in order for him to stay and I can’t see it happening, even if I want it to.
