Ander Herrera all smiles back in Manchester United’s pre-season training

After an extended break this summer with no Euro 2016 participation, Ander Herrera is back in training with Manchester United.

Pre-season training got underway this week for those players who didn’t take part in Euro 2016 and they became the first to work with Jose Mourinho at Carrington.

Herrera endured two rather frustrating years under Louis van Gaal but Mourinho’s arrival gives him the opportunity for a fresh start and one he’ll be desperate to take advantage of.

Mourinho loves a dynamic, ball playing central midfielder and Herrera knows he could potentially fill that role in the same vein as Cesc Fabregas did at Chelsea. At points in the last two years we saw the very best of Herrera but there were also plenty of occasions where he went through poor patches of form and that sort of inconsistency needs to be taken out of his game if he’s to become a regular starter under Jose.

I’m a big fan of Herrera as a person. He’s a genuine guy and that has helped him build a great rapport with fans but his next step is making himself irreplaceable for Mourinho and the best way to do that is hard work on the training ground and performances on the pitch, so he’ll be looking at our pre-season opener against Wigan as the first big chance he’s got and I’m looking forward to see how he gets on.
