Jose Mourinho could field an inexperienced side for Manchester United’s opening pre-season match against Wigan Athletic on Saturday.

A number of key players – Anthony Martial, Wayne Rooney, David de Gea, Marcus Rashford, Morgan Schneiderlin, Marcos Rojo, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Chris Smalling – are still on their holidays and will join up with the squad in China next week.

Here is the full squad to face Wigan this weekend.

Goalkeepers: Joel Pereira, Sam Johnstone, Dean Henderson

Defenders: Antonio Valencia, Guillermo Varela, Timothy Fosu-Mensah, Eric Bailly, Phil Jones, Daley Blind, Axel Tuanzebe, Luke Shaw, Tyler Blackett

Midfielders: Michael Carrick, Ander Herrera, Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata, Ashley Young

Forwards: Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Memphis, James Wilson, Will Keane

New signings Eric Bailly and Henrikh Mkhitaryan, who will be keen to impress and settle in quickly, certainly ought to start. Juan Mata and Daley Blind will be anxious to impress amid rumours that Mourinho is planning to offload them this summer.

The game against Wigan also provides Luke Shaw, who has been sidelined with a broken leg since September 2015, with a fantastic opportunity to get some much needed minutes after his belt. Man United fans will be hopeful to see Shaw (United’s standout player in the opening few games of last season) pick up from where he left off in a red shirt.

With an array of attacking talent now at Mourinho’s disposal, both James Wilson and Will Keane will need a chance to impress the manager if they are to stand any chance of playing first team football next season.
