Wigan Athletic sign former Manchester United midfielder Nick Powell

Wigan Athletic have completed the signing of former Manchester United midfielder Nick Powell on a three-year contract.

The 22-year-old was released from Man United after his contract expired this summer and he returned to the club where he enjoyed a spectacular loan spell in 2013-14.

He scored 12 goals in 41 appearances for Championship side Wigan during his loan spell and could even line up against Jose Mourinho’s side in Saturday’s friendly at the DW Stadium.

Speaking about the deal, Wigan manager Gary Caldwell insists he was very pleased with the addition of Powell at Wigan.

“Nick is a quality player. He’s the one player we wanted to get this summer and we are so happy we’ve got him,” he said.

“When I played with him, he was the best 19-year-old I’d ever played with.

“He’s had a frustrating couple of years with injuries and not managing to settle anywhere, but we absolutely believe in him because he’s a special player with the talent to get a stadium to its feet.”

Powell signed from Crewe for £4million in 2012, but only made just nine first-team appearances for United in four years at Old Trafford.

He scored on his United debut against Wigan in September 2012 and made his last start of the club in the 4-0 defeat to MK Dons in 2014. After Powell returned from injury, he was left on the sidelines with a hamstring injury in Decemember and only managed to make two subsitute appearances against Wolfsburg and Bournemouth.

It’s a shame to see him leave the club as he has shown plenty of talent, but he hasn’t been able to keep himself fit and has suffered a range of injuries that have stopped him from reaching his full potential. Hopefully he’ll be able to keep the injuries under control at Wigan and develop his career on their first-team.
